Some of your description reminds me of content and themes in Flamer and Hey, Kiddo.

I think these graphic novels that are real-life middle school memoirs are just so powerful, both for those who didn't have those experiences to understand and for those whop share those experiences to feel SEEN and be able to relate to the characters/stories. I totally agree with the cackling witch laugh at people who want to "protect" kids from tough topics in middle-grade books - did they never go to middle school? Kids are brutal at that age.

I was also nodding my head in agreement (and laughing) about the overused trope of missing/dead parents in kids' books - my husband makes fun of this all the time - step 1, get rid of the parents. ha ha But it's usually just to get them out of the way so the kids can have the freedom to get up to hijinks! lol There is really some value for kids in seeing what it is actually like to grow up without a parent (or two) - again, both for those who didn't experience it to understand and for those who did to feel they are not alone.

Great review, as always - I definitely want to read this now!

Sue
Book By BookSue Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14532098225905355332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890504570198680768.post-63452743171870600102021-10-21T10:06:32.233-07:002021-10-21T10:06:32.233-07:00What a powerful review, and it does make me want t...What a powerful review, and it does make me want to run out to read the book. I'm sad it's so brand new that none of my libraries have it, yet (and that we've committed to paying off debt the next 6 months or else I'd just buy a copy). I can't wait to read it!!

I know there's a lot of hubbub over what can be in middle grade literature (or what can be in our schools or libraries). I wish I had a solid answer. I know many 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are quite sexually active, some are seeking abortion, some are experimenting with various drugs and alcohol, and some are bullying others in the schools or being bullied. There are a lot of plates spinning for so many by such a young age and if our literature mirrors what's happening in our MG youth, it will change rather dramatically in the near future. I love your review - such important thoughts and commentary to discuss, here. And I very much look forward to getting my hands on this title. My daughter had hearing aids -- MS almost did her in with the bullying. So I can imagine when you are dealing with identity and or gender issues, it is so important to have friends and support.
