But yeah—it's hard to constantly remember all the things to avoid if you're dealing with a lot of allergies all at once. And that's so interesting that allergies are an advantage in Bloom! I keep hearing good things about that book, so I'll take a look at it. There are various allergies in our family, so we're pretty aware of it, and yet we still sent my son's new girlfriend to the hospital on Christmas Eve because, although we were super careful not to have any nuts or seafood, my other son completely forgot that he was using peanut oil to cook with!

And it's so true that despite how prevalent they are, allergies are hardly ever mentioned in books. I was impressed with how Kenneth Oppel used allergies in his alien invasion novel Bloom: for once they were an advantage!
Kim Aippersbachhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02556947405633680410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890504570198680768.post-55100670274261541302021-08-29T08:00:09.152-07:002021-08-29T08:00:09.152-07:00Thank you—I appreciate that! I have just too many books to deal with for now!
Thanks for this review of Allergic. Wow! I really appreciate the depth and thoughtfulness. I have a few allergies, but nothing like you. Wheat and Soy trigger my asthma and make me break out in an itchy rash. If I haven't had any for like forever, I can sneak a bite of my partner's cinnamon bun with minimal consequences. I'm also allergic to some antibiotics and a few other drugs. Being allergic to animals with fur of any kind is the worst because I adore cats. We had a guinea pig once and even it triggered my asthma.
Anyway, this is my way of saying that I can hardly wait to read this book!Cheriee Weichelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15662398117320256935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890504570198680768.post-27975070036321557462021-08-25T10:05:16.894-07:002021-08-25T10:05:16.894-07:00P.S. In addition to the classic antihistamines, adding an H2 blocker and Quecertin has really helped both of us. Quecertin is sold as a supplement, and we have found the Histaquel brand (available online) particularly effective. So, those are two other simple, cheap, non-prescription approaches you might want to try.

So glad you enjoyed the book!

SueSue Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14532098225905355332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2890504570198680768.post-19838219177200859122021-08-24T20:37:34.290-07:002021-08-24T20:37:34.290-07:00Wow. Having a lot of allergies is both harder and easier than it looks—although I know from experience that antibiotic allergies are a huge hassle too! Oral allergy syndrome sounds particularly difficult to deal with for your sons, so I'm so sorry you all have to grapple with that. My diet actually wasn't a big deal—my parents are wonderful cooks and figured out allergy-free meals that are wonderful, which makes me very fortunate. But it certainly gets in the way outside of the house.

That is really interesting about MCAS! I definitely suspect all the allergies are related somehow, but it always seems like allergy research is nonexistent and no one really knows where they come from or how to treat them well. Looking at those treatments, I definitely use those—I take a Benadryl every night and a prescription Clarinex (similar to Claritin) every day! I really appreciate you taking the time to share that info with me—I will absolutely keep it in mind.

I also really appreciate you convincing me to read this book, so thank you!
