MMGM and #IMWAYR: Crunch by Kayla Miller

Image
Happy new year, everyone! Today I'm excited to be recommending the fifth book in the Click  series of MG graphic novels, Crunch  by Kayla Miller! There are no spoilers  of the previous books in the series in this review! Add it on Goodreads  or preview the illustrations! To be frank, y'all, I related to this book so much  that it was honestly painful at times—like, I knew I was thrilled to see a book about navigating an overflowing to-do list, but the specific mistakes Olive makes were so similar to the ones I am making in my own life that it hurt a little bit. But that's just a testament to the realism and thoughtfulness of this graphic novel, the fifth in Kayla Miller's astoundingly good series, following Click , Camp , Act , and Clash . (There are also two spin-offs that form the Besties  duology: Besties: Work It Out , which is amazing, and Besties: Find Their Groove , which I'll discuss soon!) Let's dive in with the publisher's description : **********...

MMGM and #IMWAYR: Besties: Work It Out, written by Kayla Miller and Jeffrey Canino and illustrated by Kristina Luu

Hi everyone! I'm still a mess when it comes to commenting on people's blogs, but I'm honestly just glad I've at least kept up my reading habits recently. I do want to thank everyone who filled out my comments survey last week—it gives me a lot of helpful info as I decide how to proceed with the Great Blogger Comment Fiasco of 2022! If you didn't get a chance to fill it out, it's still open, and I'd love your input. Moving along, today we have a review of a delightful  MG graphic novel: Besties: Work It Out , written by Kayla Miller and Jeffrey Canino and illustrated by Kristina Luu! Add it on Goodreads  or preview the illustrations I think my entire existence as a blogger is to solve the problem of books that look like they'll be one thing but are actually another, and Besties: Work It Out  definitely fits into this category! A bit of backstory: Last week, I was reviewing the fourth graphic novel in Kayla Miller's delightful Click  series, comprised...

MMGM and #IMWAYR: Clash by Kayla Miller (plus a quick survey!)

Image
Hello everyone! I was very sad to miss everyone's posts last week, but there was just way  too much going on for me to get around to reading what people had to say. I hope I'll be able to fix that this week! Fortunately, I still have time to read and talk about books, and I'm here with a great one today: the graphic novel Clash  by Kayla Miller! Add it on Goodreads  or preview the illustrations OK, so I've finally decided that I completely love  this series of graphic novels! Kayla Miller has written five books in this series so far, as well as two spin-off graphic novels, and Clash  is the fourth book in the main series. Prior to now, I had read Click , Camp , and Act , the first three books in the series, and barring a mostly irrational reaction I had to Camp  (for reasons described in my review of Act ), I seriously enjoyed those books. But for some reason, I hadn't gotten around to this book yet. Well, now, book 5 is out—it's called Crunch , Earl Dizon ...

MMGM and #IMWAYR: Long Distance by Whitney Gardner

First of all, I have a fun announcement: As of Sunday... Completely Full Bookshelf is 6 years old!!! It's hard to believe I've been blogging for this long, but it's true! And it's all thanks to the two wonderful book blogging communities I participate in, MMGM and #IMWAYR, whose wonderful hosts and participants keep me coming back again and again to discover new books and rant about the ones I've read too! Here's to another year of rambling reviews! Speaking of rambling reviews, I have one today, this time of a fantastic MG graphic novel I've been waiting to read for a while. And I'm glad I fit it in, because I did not realize I haven't read an MG book at all since Go with the Flow ...in April! Today's review is of Long Distance  by Whitney Gardner. (A note before we dive in: I'm calling many of the characters in this book nerds, and I'm including a disclaimer here that I mean that in the nicest possible way—I myself am very much a nerd, ...

#IMWAYR: Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang

Image
Hi everyone! I'm very excited to be reviewing an excellent graphic novel (and Printz Honor book): Dragon Hoops  by Gene Luen Yang. Add it on Goodreads  or preview the illustrations Let's start off with the publisher's description  of this book: ********** In his latest graphic novel, New York Times bestselling author Gene Luen Yang turns the spotlight on his life, his family, and the high school where he teaches. Gene understands stories—comic book stories, in particular. Big action. Bigger thrills. And the hero always wins. But Gene doesn’t get sports. As a kid, his friends called him “Stick” and every basketball game he played ended in pain. He lost interest in basketball long ago, but at the high school where he now teaches, it's all anyone can talk about. The men’s varsity team, the Dragons, is having a phenomenal season that’s been decades in the making. Each victory brings them closer to their ultimate goal: the California State Championships. Once Gene gets to k...

#IMWAYR: Picture Book Pandemonium, Part 18—#MGReadathon Edition (again!), plus a review of Cat's Café by Gwen Tarpley

Hi everyone! Wow, do I have a lot of reviews for you today. First off, I have my second batch of reviews from participating in #MGReadathon —I reviewed 7 picture books last week , and I'm reviewing 7 more picture books this week (and leaving another 15 unreviewed, just because it was a lot  of books to read at once!). Interestingly, quite a few of today's books (the first, third, fourth, and sixth) are nonfiction! Also, I had some extra free time and crammed in a delightful graphic novel called Cat's Café , and because its unusual format meant I wouldn't be able to write a crazy-long review of it anyway, I figured I'd just tack it on to this post and talk about ALL THE BOOKS! So let's dive in! Picture Book Pandemonium! What book is it?   Stacey's Extraordinary Words , written by Stacey Abrams and illustrated by Kitt Thomas Add it on Goodreads  or preview the illustrations! Who recommended it?   Cheriee Weichel at Library Matters , Crystal Brunelle at Reading...
